Is sermorelin legal?

The activity matters: a patient-specific prescription, a pharmacy preparation and a sport rule each bring their own conditions.

Is sermorelin illegal?

There is a conditional prescription-compounding pathway for patient-specific sermorelin under Section 503A. The prescription, ingredient and pharmacy must satisfy the applicable requirements, including relevant state rules. There is no FDA-approved finished sermorelin product currently on the U.S. market.

“Illegal” strikes me as incomplete until the activity is specified. A research-labelled sale supplies no permission to use the material in people, and a prescriber’s order alone cannot settle every compounding requirement. A licensed attorney or pharmacist in the relevant state can address a particular legal situation.

Is sermorelin a controlled substance?

No. DEA’s schedules under 21 CFR 1308 do not list sermorelin in Schedules I–V. That leaves the prescription, compounding and state-law requirements in place.

Recombinant human growth hormone, or somatropin, has its own special distribution restrictions under 21 USC 333(e). The substances also differ biologically: sermorelin prompts pituitary growth hormone release, whereas somatropin supplies growth hormone directly. The secretagogue history and mechanism review explains that distinction.

Does sermorelin have FDA approval?

No FDA-approved finished sermorelin product is currently marketed in the United States. Earlier approvals covered diagnostic testing in 1990 and treatment of pediatric idiopathic growth hormone deficiency in 1997. The sponsor discontinued the products in 2008, and withdrawal of approval took effect June 18, 2009. The 2013 FDA notice determined that safety or effectiveness had not caused the withdrawal.

Compounded sermorelin has no finished-product FDA approval. The historical approval and the present-day preparation are separate regulatory facts.

The effect of FDA’s 2013 finding

The Federal Register determination preserved the route for future abbreviated new drug applications on the specified strengths. It established why those products had left the market. It supplied no approval for adult anti-aging treatment and no approval for a current compounded preparation.

The notice convinced me that describing the exit as a safety ban would misstate the history. Giving it a broader endorsement role would misstate its scope in the other direction.

How does Section 503A apply?

FDA’s interim bulk-substance policy describes the framework for patient-specific pharmacy compounding. Sermorelin has been treated as eligible within that framework, subject to the legal conditions. FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee advises the agency; FDA makes the final bulks-list decisions.

The earlier nomination system distinguished conditional enforcement discretion in Category 1, significant safety risks in Category 2, and insufficient information in Category 3. New nominations are handled outside those numbered categories. An ingredient’s position needs to be understood within the applicable policy, together with the other compounding requirements.

Withdrawn peptide nominations

On FDA’s page current as of April 22, 2026, the 503A nominations for AOD-9604, CJC-1295, ipamorelin acetate, thymosin alpha-1 and Selank are recorded as withdrawn following their earlier Category 2 placement, with the safety concerns retained. Ipamorelin acetate also retains a separate Category 2 entry under the 503B policy for outsourcing facilities. The regulatory analysis listed in the source record provides context for these distinct proceedings.

A withdrawn nomination gives CJC-1295 or ipamorelin acetate neither FDA approval nor permission to compound. Those other peptides’ nomination histories also cannot settle the conditions for a particular sermorelin preparation. The distinction between 503A pharmacies and 503B outsourcing facilities matters here.

Sport prohibition

Yes. The 2025 WADA Prohibited List names sermorelin in S2.2.4, Growth Hormone Releasing Factors. For athletes subject to the WADA Code, prohibition applies both in and out of competition. The GHRF technical document supplies the accompanying analytical framework.

There is no commonly granted therapeutic-use-exemption pathway for sermorelin in WADA-code sport. Questions about a particular condition or exemption application belong with the relevant anti-doping organization and a qualified sport-medicine clinician. A prescription and compliance with sport rules address different requirements.

Do I need a prescription for sermorelin?

For clinical sermorelin care, a licensed prescriber's order is the starting document. Sermorelin prescription requests sent to Promise Peptides (mypromise.com) go to a U.S.-licensed clinician for an individual decision, which can be a refusal. Research-labelled sermorelin is still sold outside prescription care; that sale does not authorize use in people. This prescription service accepts U.S. patients only, and the options reflect both the patient's state and the requested treatment; its compounded medication has no FDA approval.

Is sermorelin approved in Europe?

The EMA’s centrally authorized medicines register contains no centrally authorized sermorelin product. Where national rules permit magistral or extemporaneous preparation, the legal position follows those national rules. A country-specific question requires country-specific advice; this site concentrates on the U.S. record.
